Everyday Beauty – making an ‘Artist’s Book’ using walking as a source of creative inspiration

This course takes its point of departure in working with the ‘Artist’s Book’ genre, and using a concertina, or folding book, format as the creative object. An ‘Artist’s Book’ experiments with the idea of the book as a form of expression that, although it can contain words, often contains other forms of creativity such as collage, diagrams, colours etc.

A walk in our everyday surroundings - a way of finding beauty in the things we most often pass by without noticing – provides the source of inspiration to reflect, interpret and create. The concertina book - a long piece of paper folded into smaller sections - is chosen as a means to hold both the experience of the route as a ‘continuing’ line, as well as capturing the individual, ‘snapshot’ experiences found along the way. And it can be a container for even more, such as a comment on sustainability, an account of interaction, a story of strangers etc. etc.

The course is comprised of an introductory part made up of the first 3 sessions that will introduce to the artist’s book genre and give you the tools to capture your walk, take the walk and work with how to interpret your walk and transform it into a creative object. During the remaining 5 sessions, we will go into depth making your artist’s book in which you will explore how the interpretation of your experience can be expressed through line, colour, texture, etc., and with different materials and techniques. There will be guidance and feedback throughout.

You do not have to have any artistic experience to participate. And if you do have experience, the course will allow for further development and experimentation with the artist’s book genre.

There is an additional cost of 200 kr. per participant for materials. The instructor will purchase these for you.
