Sustainable Sewing: transforming shirts - lørdagsworkshop

Ever fancied transforming your wardrobe with some upcycled clothes you have designed and made yourself? Well, now is your chance! All you need is some enthusiasm, basic sewing skills and a few old shirts.

Shirt dresses are very fashionable right now, and by creating your own design, no-one else will have one just like yours! In this workshop you will deconstruct old shirts and transform them into a new dress or top. You will cut and piece and swap and stitch to transform old into new – there are many ways to do this - and you will be guided to experiment with designs to make something unique that suits your own style and personality; so all participants will end up making something different!

Please bring with you:

  • Sewing machine and attachments including spare machine needles and bobbins
  • Scissors for fabric, thread and paper
  • Tape measure
  • Pins and needles
  • Stitch ripper
  • Tailor’s chalk/marking pen for fabric
  • Sewing threads for the machine – in colours to match your shirts
  • Brown paper, notebook and pen
  • Shirts*
  • Bias binding – for the neckline of your shirts - bring in colours to match your shirts
  • Ribbons and buttons and embroidery stitches can be added as finishing touches, but we might not get that far in one day, so these are optional to bring (but if you do, please bring them in colours to go with your shirts)

*A note about the shirts:

  • I use men’s shirts as there is more fabric in them and they tend to be longer
  • I buy mostly from charity shops, but you can use new shirts too
  • We will be cutting the shirts up, so bring three or four (or more!) to have options (if you end up piecing them together, you might want them to ‘match’ or contrast)
